By now you should know that I (Davida) am an essential oils fanatic. The hippie in me loves that they are made from real, natural plants of the earth and the beauty-junkie in me loves how awesome they can make you and your home smell. Their detoxifying powder is just icing on the (natural) cake.
When I heard about the Essential Oils Blog Hop, I knew I had to be involved! My cupboard is overflowing with essential oils, but there are so many I am desperate to try. At this point, it’s probably worthwhile for me to invest in a kit but I wanted to learn more about the various essential oils before I took the plunge.
Each participating blog was offered one free sample to try out and report back on. Because Lee and I both LOVE grapefruit, I quickly picked this scent as our sample to try. Lee will be here next week so I’ll let her report back on her thoughts after she visits.
Not only do we love the smell of grapefruit, but its healing properties are perfect for the craziness that is this time in our lives. Things are wild over on the SHEuncovered front so making sure we take the time to relax, unwind and give ourselves a little “me” time is so important. Grapefruit oil is known for having de-stressing and mood uplifting properties. Exactly what we both need right now.
To go along with the de-stressing theme of grapefruit oil, we figured what better way to use it than with some homemade grapefruit bath bombs?
Is anyone else a sucker for Lush’s Bath Bombs? They are always super cute and come in the best scents, but I’ll be honest, I don’t love that they have ingredients like “Red 28” and modified cornstarch.
To avoid these ingredients, and because they are so darn easy to make, why not whip up some homemade ones?
So I put my new grapefruit oil to the test and made these insanely easy DIY Grapefruit bath bombs!
// SUPPLIES //
1 cup baking soda
1/2 cup citric acid (buy online or most health food stores carry it)
2 tablespoons epsom salts
3 tablespoons coconut oil, melted
1 teaspoon beet juice (I use the juice from canned beets)
4 drops grapefruit essential oil
1 teaspoon water (or more if necessary)
Large ice cream scoop or bath bomb moulds for full circular shaped bath bombs
// INSTRUCTIONS //
1. In a large bowl combine baking soda, citric acid, and epsom salts. Stir well.
2. In a smaller bowl combine coconut oil, beet juice and essential oil
3. Slowly whisk in wet ingredients into dry. It should reach a crumbly consistency.
4. Your mixture is ready when you can mould it into a shape and it sticks without coming apart. If it is too crumbly, add in water, 1 tsp at a time. Mixture should be dry but able to hold a shape.
5. To shape your bath bombs either pack them into a large ice cream scoop or use your moulds.
6. Remove carefully and place on a baking sheet to dry overnight or for at least 12 hours.
To use: just drop into a hot bath and let it fizz while you soak in the suds, smells and silky moisturizing coconut oil.
The verdict? They’re amazing. Not only were they so simple, but they smell great and totally transformed my nightly baths. You know when grapefruit scent can sometimes be too acidic and bitter? Not the case at all. It was sweet and soothing and basically made me want to drink my tub (don’t try that!).
I would highly recommend Grapefruit Essential Oil to anyone looking to de-stress their life or make some delicious-smelling bath bombs.
